A new clinical trial by Pfizer and Merck & Co. on a new Celebrex-1 capsule (celecoxib) shows a marked benefit for patients who had previously been given a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Celebrex was prescribed for the treatment of acute and chronic pain and inflammation in patients who have been diagnosed with NSAID-associated colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects over 10,000 people. (Photo by iStock/Getty Images)
The results showed that patients who were given a Celebrex-1 capsule were significantly less likely to develop a serious form of colon polyps, compared to those who had not taken the drug. Patients who were given Celebrex-1 had a reduction of about 25% in the number of colon polyps.
This is the first study to show that a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) may be better than a NSAID for this indication in patients who have had a history of NSAID-associated colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
As a result, the FDA issued a warning to Merck and co. for the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) celecoxib. The FDA said, “It is unclear whether celecoxib is a more effective option for patients who had previously been given a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to manage acute or chronic inflammatory bowel disease.”
The FDA said that Celebrex, which was given as a capsule, had no significant effect on inflammation in patients who had previously been given a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
The FDA added, “Celebrex is not indicated for use in patients who are allergic to aspirin, ibuprofen, other NSAIDs or aspirin, or any other NSAIDs.”
The FDA also said that Celebrex had not been evaluated for the long-term safety of NSAIDs and that celecoxib is not recommended for long-term use.
Celebrex is approved to treat inflammatory bowel disease. It was first approved by the FDA in 1977. A long-acting NSAID, the pain reliever Celebrex, was also approved in 1992 for the treatment of arthritis in patients. (See “Celebrex, Celecoxib, and Prevention of Inflammatory Events.”)
As of the time of the current study, no new celecoxib was added to the FDA’s list of drugs that are currently approved for the treatment of arthritis. Celebrex was also approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis in 2009, a condition in which the joints are damaged by the effects of arthritis.
Celebrex is available over the counter, but it is not a substitute for an NSAID. If you are taking this drug, be sure to talk to your doctor if you have a history of stomach ulcers or other gastrointestinal problems.
ShutterstockThe Celebrex label also notes that Celebrex is not effective for the prevention of heart attack, stroke, or liver damage caused by a previous NSAID.
Celebrex is not used to treat COX-2 inhibitors like Aleve, naproxen, and ibuprofen. Celebrex was developed to treat arthritis. It works by reducing the activity of the enzyme called cyclooxygenase, which makes prostaglandins in the body.
Celebrex may be used in combination with other NSAIDs to treat pain, swelling, or fever. If you have a stomach ulcer, Celebrex can be taken in combination with other NSAIDs or with other pain relievers, or naproxen and ibuprofen.
Celebrex can be used in combination with other NSAIDs for the prevention of heart attack, stroke, or liver damage. In addition, Celebrex may be used as part of a triple combination of NSAIDs and other pain relievers.

Objectives:We studied the effects of co-administration of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen (Naprosyn) on body weight and the effects of co-administration of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen (Celebra) on food intake. We also analyzed the relationship between the co-administration of Celebrex 200mg and Naprosyn (celecoxib) and the effect of naproxen on food intake.
Methods:We studied the effects of co-administration of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen (Naprosyn) on body weight, the food intake and the effect of co-administration of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen (Celebra) on food intake.
Results:The body weight of the patients who received Celebrex 200mg and naproxen was significantly reduced compared to the patients who received naproxen (P < 0.0001), but the effect of co-administration of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen (Celebra) on food intake was not statistically different. However, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. We did not find any significant differences between the two groups in the effect of naproxen and Celebrex 200mg on food intake. We did not find any effect of Celebrex 200mg on food intake.
Conclusion:The effects of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen on body weight and the effect of co-administration of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen (Celebra) on food intake are not different from those of Celebrex 200mg and naproxen (Celebra) on food intake.
